Mitty James
Mitty is a musician and broadcaster with experience in both performing and recording, as well as in supporting new and emerging musicians. She has been playing in bands for the last ten years, and has previously worked as a bass tutor for The Rock Project in Devon.
As a musician, Mitty has played across a range of genres. From playing bass with Ahara, a metal-rock band that won Buckinghamshire’s Battle of the Bands, to taking on keys and synth for Wish Hounds, a post-punk romantic band, she has recorded and released music with both. She also enjoys playing live, the highlight being her performance on the BBC Introducing stage at The Great Feastival with singer-songwriter Zara, sharing the lineup with major artists such as Stereophonics, Jake Bugg, and Gabrielle.
Mitty holds a BA (Hons) in Music and Sound from the Academy of Music and Sound, where she achieved a high second-class degree. Her dissertation explored storytelling through music, resulting in her writing and producing an album inspired by the Hero’s Journey and vintage video game soundtracks.
Alongside her music career, Mitty has experience in broadcasting and music journalism. She produced and hosted Devonstream Discoveries, a radio show dedicated to highlighting new local musical talent, where she worked closely with emerging artists, helping them gain studio experience by recording live sessions that were then featured on the show. This work earned Devonstream Discoveries a nomination for an Exeter Living Award. She also presents on BBC Radio Devon, where she co-hosts their Live Guide, and has created podcasts and voiced adverts for Radio Exe, all while writing as a music journalist for Whisper Magazine. Her experience in the industry led to her being invited as a panelist at the Community Media Festival, where she spoke about the future of local radio.
In an effort to share her passion for broadcasting, Mitty originated a course for a new after school club, Young Broadcasters, where she taught kids about journalism, radio, and podcasting, helping them develop their skills and interview notable local figures. Now, with The Rock Project in Banbury, she is excited to continue inspiring and supporting the next generation of young people.
Outside of music and broadcasting, Mitty enjoys reading, spending time with her cats, and getting lost in a good video game.
